The Pioneer Library System’s Literacy Services department will present an eight-week series of free citizenship classes at the Shawnee Public Library, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, April 30 through June 18.
Classes are conducted by the Pottawatomie County Literacy Office, a part of PLS Literacy Services, which provides English language learning and tutoring for adult students. These classes specifically have the goal of helping those interested in achieving their U.S. citizenship the tools they need.
In the classes, adult participants will work from special study guides provided to the library from a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with funds from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), a federal source of library funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. There also may be opportunities for guest speakers with experience on the citizenship process.
Everything is provided free of charge, but space is limited, and registration is required for those interested.
