Norman Public Library West is bringing together art and literacy in a bilingual setting with its program ¡Viva GLART, Grow a Learner through Art! at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.
Activities are for ages 5 and under and their caregivers and provide a bilingual setting for learning through art play.
The ¡Viva GLART! series is part of the Pioneer Library System's Growing Like a Read initiative and were made possible from a contribution from an anonymous donor to PLS in 2015.
Registration is not required in advance to participate.
Norman Public Library West's monthly Lunch and Listen concert series returns at noon Wednesday, Jan. 25.
This month's featured performer is pianist Dr. Stephen Sewell. Sewell studied composition under Michael Hennagin at the University of Oklahoma and brings a varied musical style, from Impressionist and Neo-Romantic genres, New Age and minimalism influences.
In addition to composition, Dr. Sewell is a private music teacher and accompanist.
All ages are invited to attend the concert and registration is not required in advance.
Norman Public Library West will host a series of free Tai Chi classes for adults beginning in January.
Participants will learn some of the basic movements of tai chi as a way to reduce stress while increasing balance and flexibility. The program is for people of all levels of mobility and can be performed either standing or sitting.
The classes are for ages 18 and up and are offered free of charge, although registration is required in advance. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing for the workouts.
Elementary-school age children are invited to make a new friend and work on their reading at Norman Public Library West's "Sit! Stay! Read!" program for reading to therapy dogs, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Thursday during January.
Program dates for the month are Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26.
The goal of the program is helping reluctant readers to practice their reading skills in a low-stress, non-judgmental environment. Children ages 11 and under are invited to participate.
Registration is not required in advance.
Norman Public Library West is sharing stories and more with its youngest readers in its weekly Story Times, hosted at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays in January. Story Time dates are Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.
The programs are geared to children in pre-Kindergarten and younger and their caregivers and include books, music, stories, games and more.
Registration is not required in advance to attend.
