The contest is open to anyone who has a library card with the Pioneer Library System.
To be eligible for a card, you must live, work, attend school, or own property in Cleveland, McClain, or Pottawatomie County in Oklahoma. You are also eligible for a card with the Pioneer Library System if you qualify for a card with the Metropolitan Library System.
To apply for a library card, visit a library of the Pioneer Library System or fill out the online application to apply for a library card.
The contest will be conducted under the auspices of the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
The contest is divided into three categories (age categories are based on age at time of submission):
Student ages 8-18;
Adult ages 19 and older;
Employees of the Pioneer Library System
Works produced through participation in a library-sponsored The Big Read workshop or class are eligible for submission in the contest.
Professional artists and illustrators are encouraged to enter the contest.
Digital images of the contest entries become the property of the Pioneer Library System and may be used in promotion and advertising of The Big Read: A Wizard of Earthsea and related activities. Artists maintain ownership and rights to the original artwork. Artists selected for inclusion in The Big Read Art Show agree to loan the original pieces for display.
Entries may be any size, any medium, or mix of media, as long as a digital image of it can be included in the online submission process. All entries must be original work done by the person submitting it.
All entries will be presented for judging without the artist's name included, resulting in a blind judging based soley upon the quality of the work withing the entry category.
The judge(s) for the contest will be the curator(s) of the art show that will be the Finale of the 2015 PLS The Big Read: A Wizard of Earthsea. Entries will be judges in four categories:
Reference to the novel A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin (30%)
Use of media (20%)
Design and composition (25%)
Prizes and Awards
Images of all the entries will be displayed online. Online voting will take place on the PLS Facebook page. The online vote will determine a People's Choice winner who will receive $100.
Two winners will be determined from each category. $100 cash awards will be presented during the Big Read Finale to be held in a downtown art gallery Friday, May 8, 2015.
The original artwork for the winning entries will be included in a curated art show that will be displayed at appropriate events during The Big read project period. Other contest entries will be added to the show at the discretion of the curator.
Artists who are included in the show are encouraged to off their work for sale.
The show will feature an online and print catalog of the works included, along with artist information and prices of those that are for sale. the PLS Foundation will accept payment for items sold through the show or catalogs. A check to the artist, minus a 20% PLS Foundation commission/handling fee, will be sent to the artist from the PLS Foundation.
Dates and Deadlines
Online submissions will be accepted from midnight October 14, 2014 through 11:59 p.m. December 31, 2014.
Judging will take place the week of January 8-10, 2015.
Finalists will be posted on the PLS Facebook page January 13, 2015 and online voting for the People's Choice Award will begin at midnight, January 14, 2015 and end 11:59 p.m. February 28, 2015.
Selected works may be used to promote the 2015 PLS The Big Read: A Wizard of Earthsea during the project period March 25-May 8, 2015. The Big Read Finale Art Show Awards Presentation will be held in Norman on Friday, May 8, 2015.
