Get ready for school with Health Fair

woman doctorThe Moore Public Library joins with many of its community partners to present a Back to School Health Fair, from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 11, in Rooms A and B.

The event will feature many activities to get families a step ahead for the start of the school year: 

  • Free Health screenings
  • Free Haircuts for children in kindergarten through sixth grade
  • Informational health and wellness booths
  • Free Item giveaways

It is also a chance to learn about the services offered by the library to help with learning and schoolwork.

This project is presented thanks to support of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries through funding from Library Services and Technology (LSTA), a federal source of library funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Tweens can start in computer programming with Scratch

book cover for Learn to Program with ScratchThere are always opportunities to learn new things and have fun at the library! The Moore Public Library gives tweens ages 8 to 11 an introduction to computer programming at its Scratch Coding class series, set for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25 in the Computer Training Center. Space is limited so registration for the series is required in advance.

Scratch is a free programming language available online as a free resource from the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. Participants will learn the basics of Scratch and how to create interactive stories, game, and animations.

Free computer class schedule set for August

The Moore Public Library has announced its schedule for free computer classes for August. Classes are presented in the Computer Training Center of the library.

Registration is required for each individual class. To register, visit the library, call at 793-4349, or register online at the Events Calendar.

The schedule for August includes:

  • Aug. 4, 9:30 a.m.: Basic Microsoft Word 2010 – Learn the basics of word processing software Microsoft Word 2010. Includes opening and saving a document and manipulating document text.
     
  • Aug. 11, 9:30 a.m.: Basic PowerPoint 2010 – An introduction to the presentation software Microsoft PowerPoint 2010. Participants will create a small presentation. Intermediate computer skills are recommended.
     
  • Aug. 18, 9:30 a.m.: Twitter Basics – Learn the fundamentals of the popular social media website Twitter. Practice following Twitter accounts and sending tweets. Intermediate computer skills are recommended.
     
  • Aug. 25, 9:30 a.m.: Smartphone Basics - Learn the basics of Android and Apple devices. This class will cover hardware of the smartphone and the features that come built in, including calling, texting, searching the internet, and taking a picture. This class is for the beginning smartphone user and devices will not be provided, so attendees should bring their own device.
