Kids writeIn addition to its collection of thousands of books, DVDs and resources, the Moore Public Library brings a variety of activities for children and families during September.

Activities scheduled during the month will include:

Gear up mind and body with fitness classes

YogaThe Moore Public Library is boosting both mental and physical well-being with its weekly series of workout classes.

The schedule for September classes includes:

Zumba - 6 p.m. on Thursdays during September, beginning Sept. 7. The workouts feature high-energy Latin and International music that combine dance and exercise movements. Teens ages 12 and up or adults may participate.

Beginner’s Yoga - 6 p.m. on Mondays, Sept. 11 and Sept. 18. The classes are taught by a certified YMCA instructor who will be leading the group in learning various yoga poses. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel for comfort, although there will be a limited number of mats provided. The classes are for teens age 12 and up or adults.

A signed waiver is required before each class, and anyone under age 18 must have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

The classes are made possible through the Health Literacy Grant by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, Oklahoma Literacy Resource Office and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Series giving local girls a coding experience

Coding girlThe Moore Public Library begins its Girls Who Code series at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, with classes scheduled on Monday afternoons throughout the fall in the Computer Training Center.

Each week, participants will look at various aspects of computer programming in sessions led by instructors Alex Barnard and Laura Lorg.

Girls in grades six through 12 are invited to be part of the group, and coders with experience or those who are beginners may participate.

Girls Who Code is a national organization focused on teaching girls about basic coding while also giving them a chance to meet others interested in computers. Find out more about the national initiative here.

Workout classes featured during October

Among the offerings are a new schedule for the library’s Tai Chi for Health series. Classes will be offered at 9:15 a.m. on Monday mornings, beginning Monday, Oct. 2. Tai Chi offers a low-impact activity geared to reduce stress and develop muscular strength.

More featured classes in October include:
