Blanchard Public Library

Group bringing improv and fun to the library for teens

Educating through laughs and smiles, acting and improvisation, the name OKC Improv says it all about this troupe of local thespians.

The group seeks to raise awareness and understanding of improvisation, or improv, as an art form through the many venues in which its performances take place. And this summer, that includes a stop at the Blanchard Public Library at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, as part of the group’s tour of the Pioneer Library System.

The programs will be geared to teen audiences as part of this year’s Teen Summer Reading Program. It’s an opportunity for the veterans of the trade to share their passion with a group of young people that may find a knack for it, also.

OKC Improv was founded in 2009 by co-producers Marcy Fleming, Buck Vrazel, Clint Vrazel and Eric Webb. All have many years of experience in the local improv scene, performing throughout the region with groups like locally known O.U. Improv!

A big part of the scope of OKC Improv turns to education and building the local improv scene. The group has taught more than 200 classes and workshops to more than 1,000 people and also entertained in outreach events similar to what they’ll be doing in the library for thousands of people, many of whom wind up being part of the show themselves.

Their performances are filled with audience participation, a natural for teens in helping those already with a knack for performance to expand it, and those quieter ones to find a venue to come out of their shell a little.

When not touring and teaching, OKC Improv performs in runs of four to six weeks at the Reduxion Broadway Theater, 1613 N. Broadway Ave.

Major sponsors for this year’s Summer Reading Program are the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Hitachi, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Sonic, Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan, The Oklahoman, the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
