McLoud teens "Catching Fire" with museum outreach program

The programs and activities of the Oklahoma Museum Network have been a hit for several summers around the libraries of the Pioneer Library System.

The McLoud Public Library invites teens to the Hunger Games-inspired “Catching Fire” program, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. The program takes place next door to the librarry at the McLoud Board of Education Building, 117 N. Main St.

With this summer’s science-related themes, they’re more of a natural partner than ever, bringing the fun and learning of sites like Science Museum Oklahoma out of the museum and into local libraries.

“Our list of ideas is usually massive, and usually we have to cut it way down,” said Eileen Castle, coordinator of outreach programs for the Oklahoma Museum Network. “But this year with the theme it seemed like we just kept adding to it.

“We decided to try to hit as many types of science as possible. And we also really like books, and we always want to tie what we’re doing to tie in to many different types of books.”

Participants will have their wilderness survival skills tested during the program, based on the Suzanne Collins book series.

Major sponsors for this year’s Summer Reading Program are the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Hitachi, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Sonic, Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan, The Oklahoman, the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
