"Be Wild for Art" with Shawnee workshop

Cyndy and Desiree Cashman will bring their “Be Wild for Art” activities out of their Norman studio and into the Shawnee Public Library for a morning of painting, socializing and fun, at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28.

This program typically is more popular with women, although anyone age 18 and up can participate. Register online, at the library, or by calling 275-6353.

“We will have a basic outline already sketched for each person to start from,” Cyndy said. “They will follow along as the teacher paints. Two people will be in the room, and the studio will provide everything.”

The ladies’ studio, at 209 24th Avenue NW, has been in operation for three and-a-half years, giving participants in their classes a chance to unwind for the evening with an art project. Typically those in the class are working on their own version of the same final product.

While the two-hour class time might seem a bit short for getting deep into painting, there is a lot of positive that comes from the program, in addition to the camaraderie of the group working together.

“A lot of times we will teach about perspective, foreground, background, mixing colors, shading and blending,” Desiree said.” You can get a good basic understanding. You really can learn quite a bit in two hours.”

This year's Summer Reading Program has been aided by support from the Friends of the Shawnee Public Library.

Other major sponsors for this year’s Summer Reading Program are the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Hitachi, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Sonic, Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan, The Oklahoman, the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
