Teen Writing Contest - Just the Write Story

Basic Rules

  • Entrants must be entering grades 7th to 12th grade in the 2015-2016 school year.
  • Entries are due by midnight on July 31, 2015.
  • Each entrant must be a Pioneer Library System cardholder.
  • All entries must be the original work of the submitter, which has not been published before.
  • Entries of all genres are accepted. Anything goes!
  • Entries must be a minimum of 250 words. Writers may submit as many pieces as they choose to—there is no upper limit on word count or number of submissions.
  • Choose your words wisely.
    • No crude, discriminatory, derogatory, rude, violent, threatening, or sexually explicit submissions will be accepted.
    • Absolutely NO personal information should be shared in the story. This includes things such as phone numbers, addresses, or online information (Facebook, Tumblr, etc). 
    • There will be no tolerance for plagiarism.
  • Your submission may be edited, and the Norman Public Library reserves the right to publish an edited version without your prior approval. (Examples of this include but are not limited to: editing down for length, changing real names to aliases, fixing typographical errors, changing formatting, and so on.)
  • By submitting your entry, you are giving Norman Public Library and Pioneer Library System permission to publish it. All materials submitted become the property of the Norman Public Library and Pioneer Library System. The Library retains the non-exclusive rights to publish all such works in any format.
  • The Norman Public Library is not responsible for entries that are not received.

Judging

  • Judging will be done by a selection of Pioneer Library System staff members. All judges’ decisions are final.
  • Entries will be judged on
    • Originality (unique thoughts, ideas, and/or perspectives)
    • Creativity (skillful choice of words to evoke a strong mood, idea and/or image)
    • Overall Impact (is the story thought-provoking, enjoyable, and/or memorable?)
    • Technical Excellence (conforms to submission guidelines; contains few grammatical errors, misspelled words, or typos)

WinnersVarious kindle ereaders

  • Final winners will be announced by August 31, 2015.
  • First, second, and third place winners will receive an award. Other top entries are also eligible for other forms of recognition and publication.
  • Winning authors may be showcased on bulletin boards or library displays, on local radio or television or in the newspaper, and/or on the Pioneer Library System website, located at pioneerlibrarysystem.org.
  • Some winners may be asked to read their winning entries at a special event in the fall.
  • Winning pieces may be included in the System’s OverDrive eBook Collection, if they comply with the System’s Collection Development Policy (located at http://bit.ly/1FPwUoL). These materials would then be available for checkout and downloading to Pioneer Library System card holders.
  • Winners under 18 will need to have a permission form signed by a parent or guardian to accept recognition.

How to Enter

  • You must follow all these rules to be eligible to win! Failure to follow these rules results in disqualification.

  • Subject of email must read: Just The Write Story 2015
  • Include in the body of your email these items in this order:
    • The following text statement:  I confirm that I have read and understand the contest rules and I agree to abide by them. This email will also certify that any attached submissions are my own completely original work. Sending this email will be deemed authorization to publish and display entries in any format, promote winners, and print photos of winners in local media and/or library publications.
    • Your full name
    • your library card number
    • Your phone number
    • your grade (for the 2015-2016 school year)
    • your birthdate
    • the title or titles of your work
  • Attach to the email each piece for consideration:
  • as its own separate Word document
  • in 12-pt, black, Times New Roman font
  • With the title written at the top of the first page, bolded, and underlined.
  • with 1” margins and no special effects or unusual formatting.
  • with a footer on each page listing the title, last 4 digits of your library card number, and page number in that order.
  • For example, if Sarah Stein has two pieces to enter, one called “Winter” and one called “Raindrops,” and her card number is 21698006431987, then her header for “Winter” should read Winter 1987 p.1, Winter 1987 p.2, and so on.
  • Save each item as title plus library card number.
    • Sarah Stein will send us two Word documents, one called Winter 21698006431987 and one called Raindrops 21698006431987.
