Local radio announcer recognized by PLS Trustees

Mike Pierson Jim JohnsonLongtime KGOU announcer and program director “Hardluck” Jim Johnson was recognized by the Pioneer Library System Board of Trustees during the board’s monthly meeting March 27 at Norman Public Library West.

Johnson was singled out for his years of work as Program Committee chair with Norman’s “Jazz in June” music festival.

Johnson has worked with PLS the past several years to coordinate festival clinics at Norman West. Artists have included well-attended children’s clinics along with sessions with Hammond B-3 virtuoso Dr. Lonnie Johnson, Tulsa drum legend Jamie Oldaker accompanied by Mike Hosty, John Cleary and respected bluesman Nathan James.

“Jim has been instrumental in bringing highly respected acts to our library to interact one-on-one with our customers. Attendance has been excellent and continues to grow for each of these programs,” said Norman West branch manager Mike Pierson.

Scheduled clinics during this year’s festival are to feature dynamic father-son piano duo Ryan & Ryan (which includes Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Famer Donald Ryan), Brooklyn-based horn combo The Huntertones, as well as blues hero Eric Gales.

Also recognized at the monthly board meeting was PLS Programming Specialist Galyn Cresap-Hembree for 15 years of service to the system.
