This Year's Big Read

"People do not give credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day."

Join us in reading the 2014 Big Read pick, True Grit by Charles Portis. Take an adventure with 14 year old Mattie Ross and one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest U.S. Marshal, as they travel through 19th century Indian Territory (including modern day Oklahoma) to track down Tom Chaney and avenge her father's death.

The True Grit Big Read will have a different structure and feel than the seven previous Big Reads. This one will be longer lived, slower paced, and less controlled.  Some of the traditional elements, like the bombastic kick-off and the frenetic onslaught of programs, will be gone. Other elements, like the movie nights and the book discussions, will remain.

This kinder, gentler reading experience will “officially” begin October 1. The book will be promoted and reading it will be encouraged, but it will be up to the readers to decide when, where, and how they do it.

From October through December, True Grit will be a theme or design motif for library and community events. Customers may check out reading copies from the library or they may purchase their own book via the Reward My Library buying option with Amazon. Local readers will also be encouraged to take advantage of and participate in other True Grit activities presented around the state as part of the Oklahoma Reads True Grit campaign.

In January 2014, the PLS libraries will begin True Grit programming and book discussions, distribute some free copies of the novel, and offer the Little Read activities for children.

The PLS Big Read will culminate April 12, 2014 with a family fair and Wild West Show presented as part of the Norman 89er Day celebration.
