The United States celebrates the holiday of Memorial Day to honor those who have died in the country’s wars.
The holiday takes place on the last Monday in May.
The observance began during the American Civil War (1861–65). It originally was known as Decoration Day because citizens used flowers to decorate the graves of those who had been killed in battle.
On Memorial Day the U.S. president lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
The day has also come to signal the beginning of summer.
