Norman Public Library Central will host volunteers to help taxpayers with their income tax form preparation during several weekly sessions in the Tech Lab at the library.

The service is available for taxpayers with an income of less than $56,000, and volunteers will help those taxpayers prepare their basic federal and state income tax returns.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays the library is open, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Trained tax preparation volunteers from the University of Oklahoma College of Law will provide their service with taxpayers.

AARP Tax Aide takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Mondays the library is open beginning on Monday, Feb. 10. Volunteers from AARP will work on a first-come, first-served basis with taxpayers.

Taxpayers should bring the following items: a copy of their 2018 tax return, if it is available; Social Security cards for the worker, spouse, and children born before Dec. 31, 2019; W-2 forms from all jobs; 1099 forms for any other income; IRS notices received during 2019; and statements received from a mortgage company during 2019 (these are for itemized returns).

This year, personal income tax returns must be postmarked by Wednesday, April 15. That also will be the final day for VITA tax help while the final day AARP volunteers will be at the library is Monday, April 13.

The library also has resources for printing forms or accessing online tax forms. However, library staff are not certified in tax preparation or to answer questions about filling out forms themselves.
