Growing Like a Read is the library's early literacy program that supports the development of the six pre-reading skills in children from birth to age 5: Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Narrative Skills, Vocabulary, Print Awareness, and Print Motivation.
Early literacy development begins in the first three years of life through reading, singing, talking and playing. The literacy skills developed in these early years help support the language skills needed for overall learning for the rest of a child’s life. Research from the American Pediatrics Association confirms that children who are introduced to reading early in life tend to read earlier and excel in school.
Growing Like a Read concepts are built into every PLS Story Time and Early Literacy event! Parents and caregivers are given a tote bag complete with a full set of resources to grow your child's pre-reading skills:
A stand-up book of rhymes, songs, finger plays, and activities
